Managing Childhood Diseases

As with other allergy-like symptoms and syndromes, appropriate treatment begins with an accurate assessment of specific IgE antibodies through testing. The right treatment decisions, based on clinical evidence, mean1

  • Appropriate use of medications such as antibiotics, antihistamines, leukotriene antagonists, and steroids

  • Fewer repeat office visits

  • Appropriate referrals, if needed

In this section we outline the management options available to pediatricians and other primary care clinicians treating common childhood diseases and symptoms with a confirmed allergic etiology supported by the results of an ImmunoCAP test profile. For patients with negative test results, the clinician should explore possible non-allergic symptom causes. He or she can then select treatments appropriate to the confirmed non-allergic etiology or consider referral to the appropriate pediatric sub-specialist.
